Meditation practice isn’t about trying to throw ourselves away or become something better. It’s about befriending who we are already-

One mistake we often make is misunderstanding how confidence affects us, some firmly believe confidence is something you either have or you don’t have. Confidence is a skill that develops when we nurture our bodies, discover self-awareness and practice, yes practice- Confidence.

When we talk about confidence, inevitably the topic of success creeps into the conversation. It’s nearly impossible to go out and have a huge success in life and instantly gain confidence. Finishing your first marathon does not mean you have more confidence, you had enough when you clicked “submit” after filling the registration form out (in your jammies), picked out your matching running outfit, stocked up on useless fuel gels and finally showing up at the Start Line.

We preach here: little “victories” every day in your preparations and work effort. When you leave work for the weekend, the gym this afternoon, the studio …Ā  You should be able to say that you have just “won” by doing what you needed to do to achieve your long-term goal(s). Each small victory (as small as they may seem), one after another, accumulate. Moving us closer to the big victory’s in life, like making it through a 90 minute power yoga session, a 4 hour-long marathon and especially the first firm grip and foot placement at the beginning of a day long climb.

      Do you really want to get me fired up on this subject? šŸ™‚ They are dreadful, where do I begin really?!? Hater’s gonna hate … If your marathon time is like 3:30:00 +, While doing your route planning online, take a moment to find a pub or bistro on the route and stop to have a beer or something to eat, seriously. It’s more memorable than screwing around trying to run and rip, twist and squeeze goo into your mouth. If you really want to go down this road, I’ll make the argument that a beer is better than a fruit punch gel and fresh fruit + a bagel are infinitely better, just saying.
      Time to chill and center myself once again, take care today and have a great weekend!

Though I’m sorry I got your blood pressure up on a Friday. šŸ™‚ Take care, have a great weekend and take note that if all my medical checks run clear and I’m allowed to run seriously again, I am DEFINITELY taking a mid-race break to drink a beer. šŸ™‚ That would be much more satisfying than a goopy, pastey feeling gel.

    small victories…love that! I think that will be one of my Feb goals…celebrate the small victories. I tend to forget about those and only focus on what I didn’t accomplish. Again, thanks for the reminder. You always “keep it real”. happy weekend!

      If I can get my shoes on in the morning before the drive to the gym? Small little victory for me, one of many in the day. šŸ™‚ Each time you lean forward to pick up a kettlebell with conviction and heart … another “little” victory, each and every time. Be inspired today and please take care.

    Confidence is a process of development. It takes guts to be confident, to put yourself out there, be open, to give your all and be willing to fail. It doesn’t come easy and when all else fails, fake it til you make it cuz it puts others at ease. šŸ™‚

    Happy Flippin’ Friday! Now whose up for 18 miles of fun tomorrow in the freezing Chicagoland cold? I can’t wait; it’s going to be amazing!

      Since I have not been able to compete in almost two years, I greet all my trainees at the Start Line. To me, this is more important then the impending race. It takes infinite courage to show up and to put yourself out there. Some of the best events I have ever competed in were the ones where I did not belong.
      I love the cold weather to play in err run, cycle and ski in. Have fun and please take care!

    And being confident is NOTHING to be ashamed of. Too many of us think it’s arrogant or narcissistic to be confident in ourselves and our abilities. I say, “How else can we help others and love others if we aren’t confident in our own abilities to to love and help others.” Namaste!

      There’s a fine line between being over confident and let’s say, a douche bag. When I say confident I envision an individual who is humble and pure in their actions and intentions, self aware.
      My vision of a confident individual: Allow me to help you better yourself and in the process we can grow together.

  10. I really enjoyed your post. There is a component of simplicity to finding a path to meditate, regardless of how we accomplish it. As Thoreau said, “Simplify, simplify, simplify.” The first quote is poignant.

  12. I nurtured myself today. Pilates. 4 mile walk/jog. Pedicure. Massage. It’s interesting to ponder how these things build confidence. Now if I’d just sit on my cushion and meditate.

      It takes generous amounts of confidence to nurture yourself … Saying “yes” to pilates and “no” to running 4 harmful miles, aching and hurting, not listening to your body. For some of us, merely slowing down to listen is a major confidence boost. Being confident works both ways, saying yes and saying no. šŸ˜‰

    Great message to start my week off. I have a running injury and have committed myself to 5-6 days of hot yoga for the month of February to help rehabilitate my joints. I am gaining confidence everyday that I am doing the right thing for my body, and my meditation is in my yoga practice. Thankyou for this post. I love getting validation and LOVE the LEGOS!!!

  16. I’m incredibly confident. Confident that every time I get the urge to run, I should sit down until it passes. I am no runner. I am a tripper, a sprawler, a mass of unruly limbs that should remain quietly tucked up in an out of the way form. Like the one encouraged for meditation. That way I can meditate on how I’m actually doing other runners a huge favor by staying out of their way.
