Not every day
is a good day
for the elfin tailor.
Some days
the stolen cloth
reveals what it
was made for:
a handsome weskit
or the jerkin
of an elfin sailor.
Other days
the tailor
sees a jacket
in his mind
and sets about
to find the fabric.
But some days
neither the idea
nor the material
presents itself;
and these are
the hard days
for the tailor elf.

Strange Apparition

I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine-

It’s tough to integrate into our personal story a time in our life that turned us upside down, challenging all that we’ve known and trusted.

Story time …

I’m always looking for metaphors that might resonate with the kind readers of CultFit, as they seek to catch a second wind in their workout and lives. Some of these metaphors work, some flat-out fail and some baste themselves in the hot summer sun.

This past week, I was afforded the opportunity to talk with a friend who shares my love of being active, exploring meditation, yoga and reading. We discussed in-depth a rather interesting metaphor that resonated for both of us: The Trilogy. Some stories in literature are so complicated and involved that they require more than one book. HOLY CRAP! I was thinking Fifty Shades of Grey! While my more ed-u-ma-cated friend brought up, The Foundation by Isaac Asimov. In each book of a trilogy, characters are more fully developed and explored, secrets formerly held are brought to the reader’s attention, and plot lines unfold before our eyes.

What if you thought of your journey to being healthy as a trilogy of stories? What would each book be called?

For me, the first book in my trilogy would be called, F**k It! I can do whatever I want: In which a punk ass kid flippantly ignores the love of others in order to make himself feel like a complete bad ass. My second book would be called: Ignore the pain to succeed in life: In which an arrogant blonde haired dude ignores the pain his body provides him in order to pursue vain, self-serving goals; Ignoring family and friends at every turn. And I hope someday to call the last book in my tantalizing trilogy: Marinating in the Sauce of Life: In which an old, humble man is content to accept whatever gifts the world tosses his way.

Butterfly Caught

Sometimes your joy is the source of your smile, but sometimes your smile can be the source of your joy-

The tension sprinting up through my arms and shoulders, violently grasping my neck. I can’t think straight, my mind is abuzz with the stress that has accumulated throughout the day. The list of “things” to finish before tomorrow morning was spilling over. I knew I needed a change of mind, something, anything to carry me away from this tangled moment in time into a place love and harmony.

Not too long ago I would step aside, gather up all my running gear and head out the back door for a “run“. I thought at the time, if I just ignored the pain and stress, run a bit faster and harder, get my heart rate up a little more, develop a thick and hardy lather…  I would instantly feel better by the time I finished 10+ miles.

An hour or so later, I would collapse on the porch with my head hunched forward watching the sweat roll off my nose falling diligently between my bare feet. The thoughts in my mind had slowed for the moment, until the pain and tension returned …

I would like to share with you something so profound, so ridiculous and so not cool, that you will avoid telling your friends or even blogging about it: Compassion and Mindfulness. Don’t scatter away quite yet, it gets better before it gets worse.

Using your body to invoke a better state of mind starts by paying attention to what we are feeling inside and not abusing our body through outward actions. This moment of reflection before heading out the door is the point where spirituality and personal development intersect. When we move with awareness and give attention to the stress, the aches and pains, we can change how we feel, instantly.

Notes:

A simple act of kindness towards yourself, sharing a smile and hug with another, erasing the pain before you get moving. To me? That’s pretty cool and something to share with your friends …

Pies fríos, amigo?

We are addicted to our thoughts. We cannot change anything if we cannot change our thinking-

Damn! The marathon I signed up for last October is this *bleepin* Sunday!!!

You remember the evening well, like it was yesterday. The focus on the positives of running a marathon were many: free sweat wicking tee, beer tent passes, the chance to buy a new running outfit. However, as the marathon date started to loom ominously on the horizon, the positive thoughts you once shared with others, quickly turned into negative thoughts that you shard with no one.

Even when doubts become overwhelming, when the call to starting line is announced,it feels painfully hard to back out:

What will my friends think? I quit, I’m a chump, a loser? I bought new shoes and a sweet running skirt, I picked up the race packet last night. We have reservations for pizza and beer after.”

What does it mean to have cold feet, anyways? Is it a small, nagging feeling that a huge mistake is being made or is about to be made, or an internal scream that yells, “Hey stop already! It’s not too late!” How serious does the event need to be on order to be “serious enough” to listen to the doubts, weigh them as more important than the embarrassment of not showing up, the risk of potential injury due to the lack of training and preparation, and back out of the marathon at the last-minute?

It’s one thing to have last-minute doubts about running a marathon you thoughtfully planned, trained dutifully for, back in October; it’s something else altogether to have doubts because you failed to train, you are injury prone and your sense of pride out weighs any other mitigating factors. Cute running outfit not matching included as well!

Notes:

Purpose of the post today? That the doubts we all experience before a big event should be taken seriously and not buried with “pride” and “status“. Now is the time for reflection and honesty. Because on Monday … Feel free to expose the painful, underlying reality about your torturous marathon experience in a blog post.
