: The Night Has a Thousand Eyes :

We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will-

This evening when we find ourselves handing out treats to all the little ghouls and turds that inhabit our neighborhood – Pause for a moment, and gently turn your gaze away from the harsh glow of the warm gadget in your hand (Halloween Instagram pics can wait ). What is the reality that you see unfolding around you? Can you describe the nuance in each costume that knocks at your door? Their color, the story behind each superhero costume? Are the kids smiling and excited, or are they still with nervous anticipation of scoring a large amount candy?

This reality that we are witnessing first hand is the world as it is right here, right now. It may seem that we live life outside of “reality“, warm gadget in hand and simply observing the bundled up joy standing right in front of us as we snap a series of pics. The “reality” we capture on our gadgets only exists in our mind(s) eye, and we view it through our own unique magenta or black and white lens, filtered outside of our senses.

Daily Meditation:

After we finish dinner tonight and ready the goodies to hand out, imagine for a second that you are a different person, a different ghoul. Set down your gadget, choosing to capture life from a new perspective instead. Life is not a series of pictures we share on the inter-webz. Life is a series of remarkable photos occurring right before our eyes.

A Long and Gracious Fall

A long and gracious fall this year.
The leaves are down. Gardens: emptied,
manured, tilled, smooth, and waiting.
Mower and tiller serviced and put away.

Smoker put away, as is the summer table.
Prayer flags, windsocks and their poles: down.
Twenty-foot homemade badminton poles,
peace flag at the top of one, store-bought net—
all down and put away for another year. No more
outdoor summer chores.

Fall planting — peonies and tiger lilies — done.
Summer flower stalks removed, beds mulched,
a blanket for the cold. Fall pruning done.

Woodshed roof hammered down and sealed again.
Cellar closed. Drive staked and flagged so the
snowplow knows where to go.

What else is there to do? Finally, for once, we are ready
for the snow. Ready now to come inside. Time now for
words and music, poems and shakuhachi. Time now
to light some incense, sit and stare at candlelight.

Long Halloween

They asked me what I was reading – and laughed when I told them Batman.  Probably thought to themselves, Oh, he’s a graphic novel lover. And I am – but not for why they think.  Instead I’m modeling.

And then the argument with a friend over the fact that Batman is a fictional character made up out of someone’s imagination – like stating the obvious is going to change the fact that even he doesn’t understand.

I’m never going to be rich like Bruce Wayne, but it’s the archetype that I’m tapping into.  It’s no different than studying Greek mythology to understand fundamental human behaviour we all have inside of us. I’m a martial artist – whereby the martial arts has affected the way I live my life. Reading Batman allows me to tap into a world where being better than human is possible – and that means I can try to bridge that gap in my own mind.  One thing is very clear to me: whether Bruce is real or not, he trained his ass off in the martial arts in order to do what he’s able to do. While he’s got all the gadgets in the world, hard work and time spent in the arts are the two things that really come out when he’s fighting.  And that’s something I can aspire to.

Read comics.  Be better than human.
