Take someone who doesn’t keep score,
who’s not looking to be richer, or afraid of losing,
who has not the slightest interest even
in his own personality: he’s free-
Alongside all the noise in the social media world in regards to how we are wasting our daily lives away in front of a gadget of some sort or another – All of us seem to have a tighter daily schedule with all the training, club/social events, competitions … And let us not forget about the “The weekend is here its time to race” mentality. Dinner has become a leftover lovers, microwave users dream! Stuffing our faces, racing to catch the 5pm pilates class at the gym, only to be stuck in traffic, feasting on leftover mandarin orange chicken from Trader Joe’s. Down time is the eight minutes we get to wait because the instructor is late from running her own little “turds” to soccer practice.
And here I am lamenting, writing yet another post about our hyper-media-constantly-on the run world we live in. Dear Reader – Enough is Enough. All our efforts to keep “fit”, “active” and “involved”, are actually keeping us dazed, tired and confused (awesome movie title huh?!?).
There are a few times during the year that I like to share a link(s) to a worthy cause – Consider this one of those times. There’s no need to twist your arm or whatever, however, these kids are doing such amazing and inspiring work and having fun doing it! A classic win-win situation!
Confidence is ignorance. If you’re feeling cocky, it’s because there’s something you don’t know-
After many years of “coaching” and helping other cool and inspiring folks, I am often struck by their relationship with fun. When we first meet, they often talk at great length about training plans, intensity, goals, effort and lastly they mention: “this needs to be fun.”
I have a problem with Fun.
Fun (when used above), conveys a sense of a trivial and purposeless living. Fun … Is hedonistic. My definition of fun does not seem to sit right with many people who are engaged in uber-competitive activities and have a competitive mindset. There is no magical switch you can flip, then manage to stumble into a yoga studio one afternoon to “center” yourself. Fun is a lazy vacation, sipping mojito’s on a white sand beach in Belize, not an early morning wind sprint session and killing the weights before bed.
Should we abandon the idea of “fun” all together? Nope, I just ask that you think about “fun” in a different light, a different Sense …
All aspects of our lives ought to be enjoyable, interesting word(s): Enjoyable, Enjoyment, Enjoy.
My definition of fun? Is “enjoyment.”
Not what we have but what we enjoy, constitutes our abundance-
What in the world does the terrible little word, epiphenomenon have to do with fitness, yoga pants, health and our spiritual well-being? Depends on who you ask, and seeing that you found epiphenomenon here, let us explain a little bit more.
Our conscious mind is but an epiphenomenon of the physical brain (last time we checked), and with timely, appropriate and stimulating mental exercises (reading this blog is not one of them) the brain can be enhanced, empowered and enlightened …
Imagine if you will, that we are sitting peacefully in a lovely garden (maybe The Garden of Epicurus?) enjoying some vino, a baguette and a fine section of Brie from the local stinky cheese monger. Friends, enjoying each others company and happiness. We could change the setting, sipping VitaCoCo after a group run. Discussing class as we wipe the sweat from our mats. In each of these events, we are filled with utter happiness. Allow the struggles of your day to melt away … Let happiness be your primary reason to do anything you like. The smile on your face? How did it get there in the first place?!?
