Grappling With Forgiveness

To return to the root is to find peace. To find peace is to fulfill one’s destiny-

Long painful story made short:  In order to reach our goals we need to forgive ourselves first.  That’s it, we promise.

What happens when you set a goal for  yourself and then fail to reach it?  Run a marathon in under 2:30:00?  5k Under 20 minutes?  Go a day without forgetting something important, are just a few examples.  Failing to reach our goals happens to all of us each and every day.

For many,  simply finishing a race is not enough.  We want each and every event to be a record smashing success.  Breaking goals and records each and every time we head out of the door.  If only this was true  …

What race are you running? And what are the failures, big or small, you’re kicking around in your head this morning?  Did you have a great race this past weekend, but finished in such poor shape that you vowed never to put yourself in another similar situation again?

Over the years and through many failures along the way.  One thought rings true:  You will always have another chance, Next weekend, next month and hopefully next year.  If you’re facing a recent failure learn to accept and forgive yourself first (Lance Armstrong is a prime example) .

There is no good reason to punish yourself after a failure, no matter what it may be.  Forgive and take the next step forward.

**We originally had penned a really nasty post brim full of seething words aimed at this whole Lance Armstrong debacle.  Remember:  Write drunk – Edit sober … **

The Plan-

The Workout-

A nice quick Warm Up consisting of either a Pulse Trail Run or Hill Sprints?

25 Hardstyle KB Swings (heavy – ish)
Cartwheels (To each side)
Standing Broad Jumps (Full and Open Hip Activation)

Lets try to keep this program going for 30 minutes shale we?

Notes:

Forgive and move forward.  Hey, sometimes it’s rather hard to forgive ourselves … Totally normal peeps!  Have a great day today and ENJOY!!!

Nice piece especially the forgive yourself part. I believe it is an important part in the process of achieving our dreams. It is important to fail to move on and to treasure success but it is also important to forgive ourselves when we fail because if we don’t fail we will never know how to succeed. Not every dream is a success story but for sure it was worth living and at least we can say i tried.

I’ve lost count over the years of lamenting and beating myself up after coming up short during a race or in life. Forgiving yourself may not be the easiest thing to do although its critical to moving forward.
Thank you for stopping over today!!!

I do agree.. I’ve been through that and maybe still, something we should learn to do no matter how hard it may be!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Inspring! 🙂

Thank you! We’re you talking about the forgiveness bit or being high on acid and slinging poo portion?!? 😉
Either way thank you for reading and I wish you the best!!!
FYI- I grew up in Upstate NY and really enjoy reading about all the great work you have been doing.

Hi. Thank you for dropping by my blog. I love your post. I have been grappling with forgivingness (forgiving myself that is) and this makes all my whining sound so ridiculous! 🙂 Good reminder!

I wish I could do a cartwheel….it’s funny how things we did as kids seem so tough now! Someday!

  8. fitnessclyde says:

True words today……. forgiveness its a good look unlike throwing poo.

    • CultFit says:

I guess you would have to do a lot of soul searching to find the heart to forgive yourself if poo slinging were to happen? Have a great week mate!

  9. Great post on forgiveness, when the struggle to surpass a goal falls short!! By the way I forgot to mention that I finally got that first pull-up…thought u would be proud lol. Thank you for sharing 🙂 have a great week!

Thanks for this. I am home with a cold and it threw a wrench into something planned for the clinic I lead. I called by speaker to tell her what’s up, and I am trying to calm the voices in my head about the timing of it all. May be forgiving oneself also involves taking care of oneself too?

    • CultFit says:

Great point! Healing, forgiveness and taking the time to care for ourselves is vitally important to a balanced life. I hope you are feeling better, take care!!!

  13. Great post and great timing ! Ran my 5th half marathon of the year about a week ago. I said I wasn’t going to worry about time due to the oppressive heat and humidity, but DANG! I wasn’t expecting to finish with such a dismal time! Especially after I ran the first half of the race at a 9:30 pace…I am no track star, so I aim for a 10 minute mile at that distance. It bothered me for several days, but I figure finishing with a slow time is better than quitting. My next half is in October. Another chance for redemption!

No plan for today… BDJ is tired. 13 days in a row, I’m on the couch with my girls watching The Lorax. The spelling is correct…my 8-year-old said it’s like thorax with an “L” instead of a “th”. The future isn’t dead yet.

Lance – forever remembered for his achievements on and off the bike. Throwing poop – only funny if you’re on acid.

This very much resonated with me. Thank you!

  19. Poo throwing..is that something people on acid do? I have a feeling chimps enjoy it too.

Thanks for the like on my post! You’re right; self-forgiveness can be one of the most difficult and necessary acts for us to move forward in any aspect of life. When we can’t forgive ourselves, we get stuck there in regret of the past. Always better to forgive, learn, and move on.

I have a pain condition that hypes up my limbic system and makes it very easy for me to get too emotional or reactive about things. I get a lot of practice forgiving myself for an overblown reaction, but then I can learn about my triggers and underlying worries, and help myself do what’s necessary to feel safe. That means that I am always helping myself get better both at living and at responding. It can be embarrassing when I overreact, but I try to be grateful that I’m forced to learn more about myself and solve any underlying issues that I’d be able to simply ignore if I didn’t have CRPS. Much different from racing, but self-forgiveness applies to so many aspects of life.

There is a lot of bloviated non sense out here in the blog-o-world … Your blog is so authentic and “real”! A nice change of pace so to speak. Wow great post! So often I focus on goals and goal setting that I forget to plan for how I’ll feel if I don’t reach them. Needless to say, I usually beat my self up but I’m going To try forgiveness instead 🙂

Ps amazing idea with cartwheels, can’t wait to do them with my next group!

    • CultFit says:

I’m really glad to hear you liked this post, personally it means a lot to me- Thank You!!!

You will notice that I like to use some not so common movements when we perform a program: Cartwheels, Broad Jumps, Tumbling etc all show up at times … Just like we were kids again, Hmm?!?

Take care and please be well!

  29. It seems easier – and nicer – to forgive others than to forgive ourselves. (Love the photo of the waves lapping up onto the shore.)
