It seems that in today’s world we have the freedom to pick and choose form a potpourri basket of interests …
“Check it out! I’m like totally doing this 30 day paleo, meditation, yoga, power walking, green smoothie, smiling at strangers, whole body cleanse thing! Just read about this push up challenge and hill sprint interval thing as well!”
Why do we choose to pursue a wide variety of “things” simultaneously and figure out how to do these “things” in a way and on a level that is average at best?
“My friend and I had a great workout at the box yesterday! 5 rounds of: 15 push ups – 15 jumping jacks – 15 sit ups – 15 walls balls and a 400m run. I still need to work on my push ups though, three years now and they are still pretty sloppy.”
Whatever happened to developing a deep knowledge base, knowing information (not stored on a gadget) and total devotion to the pursuit of mastery in a single field?
“I forget what my split times are in the pool but I’m thinking if I can work on my transition more it should make up for my poor swimming performance … Maybe?!?”
Are we afraid as a society to endure the intense work, discipline and willingness it takes to master a selected discipline? Are we afraid to embrace the risk needed to walk away from merely being “average” in the name of becoming extraordinary at one?
“It’s the same during every century ride: Chum it up with the guys for the first few miles, then I ride alone for the remainder of the time, lost in my thoughts, worried about “something”? I suppose it’s the 8am yoga class tomorrow and the 5k at noon?!?”
…
Yearn for the sense of intensity, focus and intrinsic reward that comes from the single-minded quest to master a particular body of knowledge: Yoga, mediation, martial arts, relationship(s), life etc. Radiate the pure energy and passionate spirit that comes not only from having attained mastery, but from simply being in the process of mastery. The secret Dear Reader lies here in the process of seeking mastery, this is where we find awareness, comfort, stillness, joy, harmony and balance.
Notes:
Do you, deep down inside, feel satisfied knowing that you are merely pretty decent at a bunch of “things”, but not exceptional at any?
Pensamientos?
“I tell you I must go!”

Do you think I am an automaton?—a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!—I have as much soul as you,—and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh;—it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal,—as we are!”
– Charlotte Brontë – Jane Eyre

A very inspiring, touching and important post is on tap tomorrow to celebrate the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. I hope you stop by, until then – take care and be well!

Undoubtedly you have noticed some changes here over the past fortnight. Since day one we have been changing, this applies to your cute life story as well. Indeed many “things” in life change and if you could allow us a few moments of your precious time, we would like to share some questions we received recently via email. Each one hints at change and rather than writing a painfully, bloviated post? Prolixity is not something you will find here …
*We are paraphrasing the emails for your reading pleasure.
Tom – From Seattle
… Great site! Could you tell me more about your early posts? You guys seem to have quite a distaste towards CrossFit, the purveying atmosphere around CrossFit and those who choose to engage in extreme fitness programs?
Tom, our story here is one of injury, pain and suffering. Almost all of our off-line members (many of you as well) have suffered life altering injuries participating in events they loved and CrossFit just so happens to one of them. The early posts were raw with emotion, hate and vitriol … Then something changed. The problem was not the event, sport or routine (CrossFit). It was us. Hate is a powerful emotion that has evaporated over time and the more closely you analyze the details relating to the injuries, trying to find causation … You realize that you yourself are the problem.
Trish – From Auckland
… I’m curious as to why you guys switched to a Creative Commons License?
Trish, from post number one CultFit has been uncopyrighted. In essence this means every post has been released in the public domain, and the copyright on these posts as well.
There is no need to email asking for our permission … Everyone reading this today is free to use our content, however you choose! Email it, Pin-It, Like It, Share It, Write a book with “IT”. Your credit is appreciated but not required.
What you see here is yours, to do as you please. Our mindset of Seva is to give and not to hold, to let go of ownership and free ourselves of the stress and pain of trying to protect ownership (writing a book – copyrights). It is from this humble mindset that we embrace uncopyright. We sincerely hope that in doing so, our community will be better for it and we will all have a smile on our faces.

People are cynical and honestly: Why wouldn’t they be? All of us are overworked, trampled on, paying more for yoga class and coconut water. Our dreams are slowly fading away and struggling to find meaning.
Dark clouds seemingly consume the conversations we have with friends and family. Is talking about Doom and Gloom useful? It some instances it can be, just not today.
Today we challenge you to find the courage to be optimistic!
The Plan-
The Workout-
Happy Hips, a little Balance Beam work and Skipping Rope (if you “jump rope”? Try again). Followed By:
Roll a Single Die three times: 100,200,400,600,,800,1000
It’s KB Swing Medley time peeps!
Left Hand, Right Hand, Double Hand, Single Bell (HEAVY), Side Step Swings
Hard Style! Roll your precious die carefully … The number it displays is the amount of Swings you will be performing!
Notes:
True personal awaking and change happens thorough conversation, Dear Friends. Open up and comment below about anything in your life, purge these thoughts from you. The more Random the better … ENJOY!!!

Continued from yesterdays little chat …
How many of us have let the moment pass? Failed in the moment to address a problem or correct a mistake on the spot? Maybe some d-bag cut ahead of you at the market. What about that time we overheard a nasty comment to another? Better yet, in the gym we keep telling ourselves to focus on proper form and movements although we never do.
To be fully present, we need not dwell on or waste time with our worries festering in our minds, our minds stuck in inaction … Could have, Should have, Would have peeps?!?
No one knows what will happen next,
Such portents fill the days and nights;
Years prophetical! The space ahead as I
walk, as I vainly try to pierce it, is
full of phantoms, Unborn deeds, things
soon to be, project their shapes around
me, This incredible rush and heat, this
strange ecstatic fever of dreams …The unperform’d, more gigantic than ever,
advance, advance upon me.
The Plan-
The Workout-
Hill Sprints, Yeah Hill Sprints!
Set 15-20 minutes aside to thoroughly Warm Up. Happy Hips and maybe, just maybe our Workout from yesterday.
Not For Time:
25-30 Hill Sprints (90-95% Max Effort)
1-5 Warm Up, 6-10 Snappy – Dynamic (Listen to your body here), 11-15 Push, 16-20 Break through your comfort zone, 20-30 Snappy – Dynamic ( Run ’em out)
Notes:
A tad deep today, for a reason … Who strips away the layers and finds the true meaning? ENJOY!!!
