To love life

when you have no stomach for it
and everything you’ve held dear
crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,
your throat filled with the silt of it.
When grief sits with you, its tropical heat
thickening the air, heavy as water
more fit for gills than lungs;
when grief weights you like your own flesh
only more of it, an obesity of grief,
you think, How can a body withstand this?
Then you hold life like a face
between your palms, a plain face,
no charming smile, no violet eyes,
and you say, yes, I will take you
I will love you, again.
Notes:
Smile and be well today.

Clumsily in these trying times, we move forward … Love – Hope – Faith
** I have been wanting to share the following story with you for some time now. A whimsical story filled with love, a dude and unbridled hatred of following pedantic training plans. **
“Dude, the Leadville Trail Marathon is just around the corner in June. Are you ready training wise, mentally prepared?”
The conversation that followed only lasted at tops – Two minutes. This dude is the type of person that runs for pureness, to smile and what he told me was his love of being immersed in nature. The type of runner who takes his shoes off and runs 13 miles for the “pure enjoyment of being outside“. Training plans, schedules, blah … Are a hindrance to him. Three miles on Monday. Six on Thursday, taper off before you cycle and load nutritionally or whatever that means.
I paused, listened deeply to the passion resonating in his voice and thought:
The very characteristics that define “this dude” who can handle the adversity of just showing up to a marathon without any training what so ever are the very same characteristics that will define who we are as individuals: Happy, healthy and smiling through life.
Stop and take notice, that’s what I did. A simple conversation with a close friend turned my attention to what I (we) have faith in, who you love, what you love, and your dreams for the future.
Notes:
The important lesson this morning (personally speaking from the story above), take the time to acknowledge with gratitude all the good things you have in your life. Trivial, bloated training plans not being one of them!

When was the last time you engaged in a conversation in which you truly listened to the other person, sat eye to eye, connected?
People today are so pre-occupied with their own thoughts, bursting in their lululemon seams to interject with a story of their own, simply too distracted, disinterested that their eyes are searching everywhere but in your eyes.
“Did you see what she is wearing … Didn’t mean to interrupt, what were you talking about again?”
This sort of “thing” happens all too much. One of the most simple gifts to present to someone is to be there with them completely, with focus, with intent.
Notes:
Listen, attentively without interrupting, take in perspective, allow others to express themselves. Remove yourself, step back and listen.

“I tell you I must go!”

Do you think I am an automaton?—a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!—I have as much soul as you,—and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh;—it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God’s feet, equal,—as we are!”
– Charlotte Brontë – Jane Eyre
Notes:
A very inspiring, touching and important post is on tap tomorrow to celebrate the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. I hope you stop by, until then – take care and be well!

Why do we allow others to inflict the burden of excellence upon ourselves when we’re not even sure what it means? The broad discussion I am asking you to contemplate this morning: Is the quest for “elite” performance – results, eroding our true inner ambition, our true talents?
We should not be pushed away from developing enthusiasm, passion for our talents. We should not be trapped inside what is regarded as potential by the supportive folks around us. In essence: We are being caged by possibility. We are being driven towards developing an “excellence” that might be better called “obsession.”
Notes:
“Excellence” shouldn’t be a burden every time you click in, go for a run, step with presence on your yoga mat; achievement shouldn’t be a weathered rope around your neck in the gym(box) or a weight tied tightly around your waist. Doing well, just being you. Should be a choice, a gift, a chance, a pleasure … a chance to be free.
