(All) Knowing

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves-

Sometimes trying to understand what other people know and don’t know can be extremely challenging.

*I’m writing to the men reading today, because all of us do this*

Over the years we have developed a rather keen tendency to think we knew all along something, that we actually just learned two minutes ago talking with a friend. Is it fair to assume that you didn’t know that vintage Italian road bikes use 36 mm X 24 tpi threading for the bottom bracket?

One instance of not knowing exactly what one “knows” is the illusion of explanatory depth. This is the illusion that we can explain “something” deeper, with more clarity and depth, than we actually can. I’ll use myself as an example, because, I think much differently than most folks do

As adults (used loosely), we are all-knowing, we know all, we can easily explain the intricacies of the world at a moments notice. Then when asked to do so by a friend? Our minds go blank and we instantly start looking for an answer on our iGadgets. Many are shocked when they realize they were mistaken about the depth(s) of their knowledge How dare you question me in more depth and detail?

What am I getting at?

Daily Meditation:

Exploring the depths of a conversation can be truly magical when we switch off the I know this already parts of our inner dialog, and instead – Open up our hearts to listen and learn. This process is profound when attending a new yoga class, picking parts out for a vintage road bike and – A show of hands: Listening to the salesperson down at the local hardware store, the first time! Full disclosure – I have made three return trips once for not listening and “thinking” I knew the answer all along.

Be inspired and have a beautiful weekend!

Loving You Live

And then there are the times when the wolves are silent and the moon is howling-

We can learn so much by looking up at the sky, with wide eyes, in wonder. We can feel deeply when sitting beneath a tree, in stillness after practicing yoga with some close friends. We can experience every sense nature presents to us while lying down in dewy grass after finishing a race. Nature is here to remind us and allow us to become curious about the great mystery of balance, harmony and life.

One of the Gifts that can arise from a recent bout of injuries, the inevitable surgeries, and rehab is a gift that can also be reaped from reading cheeky a poem by Shel Silverstein: Slowing Our Pace In Life.  In the time it takes you to recover from injury so many clouds will gently float past you, you’ll start to take notice of the flowers growing diligently in a nearby field. The words filling the page will take on completely new meaning, depth. This simple act of just “being will ignite a new understanding of yourself, forgiving you for all the abuse you have subjected yourself to.

Notes:

Because of our mind numbing daily pace, we all forget, that sometimes, we are an integral part of nature. Be well today and take care.

Since We Last Spoke

Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field.  I’ll meet you there.  When the soul lies down in that grass the world is too full to talk about.”

The one “thing” that keeps us writing is the friendships we have developed over the past year with you, our dear readers.  All of us have different backgrounds, yet we also share a great deal in common.

Grown up chat time amongst close friends.

Many well-intentioned blog-o-sphere peeps common belief is that:  If they buy the right book, find the right workout program, discover the proper weight-loss program, employ the right combination of body spray, dress in the latest seasonal Lululemon colors, eat organic fruit from Whole Foods … While also having the latest gadget, having the best yoga mat in class, chanting the best mantra, eating gluten-free, pressing the right pressure-points while foam rolling and breathing the proper way chomping on a veggie burger?  Everything in their nettlesome lives will be perfect.

Here’s the truth between friends.

If you drink more than a liter of water a day, find nice shoes that fit, and go for a walk daily (even when it’s nasty outside), only THEN will all of our life’s mysteries and problems be solved.

We know you don’t want to hear this next series of thoughts, tough luck!  We, YOU and the peeps behind you.  Spend too much of our day, day dreaming and writing witty blog posts on why our lives seem so oddly out of balance.  We want to make life better for those we love.  We also want to improve the world we call home and give it the wisdom of what we have to offer.  We want to know how to do “something” better and we look to those who will provide guidance.

Here’s the problem:  We spend so much time giving advice to others that we simply forget about ourselves.

The advice we give only satisfies the recipients appetite for so long, then the hunger strikes again.  Wanting better, fresher and smarter advice than the day before.  A vicious cycle begins …

Do you truly want to know how to improve across all areas of your life?  From doing the wash to performing a kipping pull up?

Notes:

You should eat a gluten-free, vegan diet and wash it down with some refreshing coconut water.  Boot camps are for the weak at mind, X-Fit is where it’s at.  Pilates is for soccer moms and Yoga is for, well … If you ever needed advice?  You won’t find it here friends.  Be well today and ENJOY!!!
