Una Pizca de Perspectiva

It is not a bolt to be tightened into place, but a seed to be planted so it may bear more seed toward the hope of greening the landscape of ideas-
Imagine if you will, that you are riding along a country road and your full attention is focused on the movements of your body, position of your hands on the bars, each up and down stroke of the pedals, the air flowing past your ears and the countryside rushing by. There is no room out here in your “awareness” for errors or contradictions; most of us know that a distracting thought or emotion might get us buried face down in a hedge, conveniently packed with stinging nettles for our future enjoyment.
If cycling on gravel roads during extreme heat does not resonate with you this morning, the complete immersion in an experience could occur while you are patiently waiting in line for a latte, practicing yoga, picking your nose, or reading an old issue of Good House Keeping magazine. If your passion is running (injury free mind you), it could happen during the descent of a tricky trail course or even two miles out from finishing your first 10k.
Notice that moments such as these provide flashes of intense – vibrant living against the dull, mundane events of everyday life.
Vibrant living, rather than happiness, makes for enjoyable experience(s) in this thing called life. We can be happy experiencing the passive pleasure of lying on the couch watching the Red Zone Channel, trudging along head down, ear buds in, tuning out the world around us. Although this kind of happiness is dependent on favorable events beyond our control: Mainly the wife or husband letting you veg on the couch all day and the weather outside dictating your daily activities.
Notes:
The happiness that we surrender to, the happiness of our own making, what truly makes us happy without any outside factors? Opens many doors to personal growth, without ever counting miles, cadence, split times or reps …

The little things in life. The sound of your cleats clicking purposely into your pedals, the wash of riding through a freshly formed puddle, the sound of tree branches playing briskly in the wind, are music to my ears.
The little things in life. The sound of silence during an early morning run, the gentle flight of seeing the first blue jay of spring, an optimistic robin persuades me to perform an aria with her during the final miles.
The little things in life. The sound of your wife blow drying her hair early on a Saturday morning, the snap of an eyeliner case, the sound of shaking an empty bottle of hand lotion, truly music to my ears. The continuo: the little one’s bedroom door opening sneakily and shutting with a giggle, a gust of wind across the siding, the last drop of coffee pouring into a porcelain cup. The little things are what we remember of this Life.
The large events in our personal lives have their place as well. Finishing and running a personal best 10k, belonging in the lead group before the start of a marathon, finishing your first century ride of the year. However, even the large events are assembled craftily from many little “things“. The rush to the local emergency room and the stillness of the air in such a sterile environment, the brave face you try to present to the caring staff, the small choked cry and the sound of tears dropping with purpose on a medical tray, the snap of a joint being dutifully put back into place, the sound of thread being pulled through the wound, the way your loved one holds your hand tight. The little things.
Notes:
These little things we neglect, are Everything.

Surely he who is worthy to receive his days and nights is worthy of all else from you.
And he who has deserved to drink from the ocean of life deserves to fill his cup from your little stream. See first that you yourself deserve to be a giver, and an instrument of giving.
For in truth it is life that gives unto life-while you, who deem yourself a giver, is but a witness.

Be well today and take care.

What in the world does the terrible little word, epiphenomenon have to do with fitness, yoga pants, health and our spiritual well-being? Depends on who you ask, and seeing that you found epiphenomenon here, let us explain a little bit more.
Our conscious mind is but an epiphenomenon of the physical brain (last time we checked), and with timely, appropriate and stimulating mental exercises (reading this blog is not one of them) the brain can be enhanced, empowered and enlightened …
Imagine if you will, that we are sitting peacefully in a lovely garden (maybe The Garden of Epicurus?) enjoying some vino, a baguette and a fine section of Brie from the local stinky cheese monger. Friends, enjoying each others company and happiness. We could change the setting, sipping VitaCoCo after a group run. Discussing class as we wipe the sweat from our mats. In each of these events, we are filled with utter happiness. Allow the struggles of your day to melt away … Let happiness be your primary reason to do anything you like. The smile on your face? How did it get there in the first place?!?

What exactly is the importance of having a open mind?
Personal and spiritual growth begins with a healthy dose of open-mindedness, that’s the importance. At what age did you stop asking “why”?
For the parents reading this morning, when the little ones ask “why” … Like a billion times before lunch? It gets old really quick! We beg of them to stop. However, and curse us if you may: Asking “why” should never go away, no matter how cantankerous and old we become.
There is always room for more understanding in our lives. If dudes want to wear skinny jeans and fedoras while shopping at Whole Foods? Totally cool … If we stay narrow-minded with the belief that what we know is the divine truth? We end up greeting any and all differing views as a falsehood. Feel like ruining a relationship real quick? Stop asking “why” and become less understanding. We triple dog dare you to try this?!?
There is a looming set of clouds full of ” ignorance” forming on the far horizon. The ingredients for a perfect storm are all around us: Total immersion in social media, failure to notice the changing environment, lack of empathy towards others, relying on facts and not deep-rooted knowledge. Are we forgetting anything?
There is hope young Padawan(s) One way we as a whole can rid ourselves of this storm is to allow the light of higher awareness to shine down warmly upon us: Ask “why” and practice becoming more open-minded. Is Mark Sanchez (aka Buttfumble) the best QB in the NFL … Maybe – Maybe not?!? Let’s discuss this further.
Open-mindedness = Growth
*Better come strong with your QB argument! Just saying.*
The Workout-
A little homework is in order before we carry on with The Workout today. Hey, save the comments for after class … Look up these two words using your Google Machine: Techne and Episteme
What, you might be asking are these two dreadful little words doing here this morning?
Is your workout based on Techne (craft, experience and know how) … Or, are you trying to impress your friends with Episteme (book knowledge and showing off the title/certifications/badassness of your program). So on that note:
A nice flowing Warm Up consisting of Crane Pose play and breathing control. Followed by:
10 KB Perfect Push Ups
10 One Arm KB Bent Over Rows (alternate arms – load)
10 Step(s) High Knee Walk (each foot – shoes off – walking on clouds)
Play.
Notes:
Techne or Episteme? Why really? I’m trying to be open-minded about all of this? Be well this weekend and please take care!
