Momento de Gratitud

I’m writing this post surrounded by mismatched socks, Lego’s, a lone blaster rifle and Anakin’s light-saber. Sitting on the only comfortable spot on my fifteen year old couch, typing on a MacBook that’s been around the world dozens of times and left a battery dead somewhere in a far off desert, or on my kitchen counter …
You know what? I couldn’t be any happier.
Earlier this morning before driving to yoga practice at 0500, I caught myself picking the millionth crumbled Cheerio out from underneath my foot and organizing the books we were enjoying the night before. In this moment of silence, stillness, I laughed thinking about my Son who had brought these crumbled Cheerios and books into our home. My heart beat slowly, filled with joy – Realizing that I am happier now, in this beautiful mess, than I was a year ago, hobbling about on crutches. I savor these moments of gratitude, more than I could have ever imagined.

Speak (your) Truth

The joy of being afflicted by “social correctness“, which is really just a gentle way of saying passive aggressive. We have become so self-conscious, that we no longer speak our minds. Rather, we dance, spin and obfuscate (use my blog as an example) what are often very obvious truths about ourselves, and the world around us.
To be true to ourselves, we must speak our truth and own it. We do this by looking at ourselves in the mirror, asking ourselves the hard questions that confront us and heeding to our hearts. In this way, our hearts will not stray far, fall off our center or lose their way because we will be connected to this thing called … Reality.

During this Holiday season I am so very grateful, blessed to have met some pretty cool and authentic folk on the blog-o-sphere since I started writing.

Why is it always this way?

How much time did we waste wanting “things” this past weekend? Searching for a new pair of minimalist running shoes, a new GPS gizmo for the bike, the latest and greatest all natural yoga mat? Wanting to be thinner, healthier. In today’s world it seems we are always caught up with wanting and searching for newer and better “things“.
Did you wake up this morning eagerly chasing after the “things” you could not find the prior two days? When we spend all of our time wanting we leave little room for the possibility of ever having a calm, peaceful state of mind. Our mind becomes like a playful dog, panting and drooling at your feet, waiting to chase after the next ball. Better yet, just like a like a dog, many of us are rather adept at chasing after our own tail! The direct result of all this play time is that our mind becomes unfocused. We focus more on what might happen or could happen, rather than what is actually happening right now. So in chasing after the next great “thing“, we miss out on the present.
For many of the kind folks reading today, there is the real daily grind of reality and there’s what they think life should be like if they had more stuff to make it better. The space between the two is usually equal to the level of disappointment and frustration when things don’t go as we’d like them to. Somewhere in the middle lies acceptance of things as they are and a greater sense of appreciation for the small “things” in life.
Notes:
The start of the week is an excellent time to take a moment or three to reflect on what, or who, you are most grateful for. Not wanting things to be better, just content for what you have.

A “Great Day” today lies within our power to create it.
During the events of today, we will use our free will to create such a day that is filled to the brim with love, compassion and joy. We will start today by being kind and loving to ourselves: A brisk walk and a free-flowing hour of yoga will do just fine. We will purposely take every breath with awareness and gratitude. We will try to eat only nourishing, healthy food (dark chocolate and tea), think only pure, happy thoughts (the Red Wings will not make the playoffs). We will give our friends and family our unwavering attention. We will tell them sweetly that they are loved, that they have a profound impact on our lives. We will make this day a day to remember, a day to treasure.
… When I rest at the end of today, reading quietly with my Son. I will be able to see how much power for good lies within my ability to create it.

Every day presents us with a generous gift; every breath we take is a blessing upon our souls.There is nothing to take for granted in this fleeting, A to B life we live. Much of what we experience,day-to-day is petty, an annoyance to our drab routines. We become impatience far too easily, loathe the people we virtually “follow” … Building and releasing anger is our daily libation.
