**Not very often do we feel compelled to preface a post, well today is a bit different. Our opinion today is wide-ranging and all over the place (for a reason) it’s up to you dear peep reading in your jammies on this fine morning to decide where you want to take this discussion today. So without further ado we present you this monstrosity!**
Today’s sign of the Apocalypse: A Night With the World’s Most Hated Bands
Does it seem that our society has made a gentleman’s agreement in regards to “stuff” that we should know? And the means in which this information is delivered is based on facts not knowledge: “You should eat a LvL 5 Vegan diet to run faster.” Why? “Well, it helped me so why would it not help you?” I don’t know? “Well Nickleback is the best band ever!” OK,please explain why that is so?
The reason we have a salacious love affair with facts is due to how easy they are to get (iThingy) and also how easy they are to test. “Great Little Bobby you scored 8 out of 10 on your Fitness Trainer Cert.” …Feel empowered to spread your wealth of facts and not true knowledge.”. This is not something that is new and if you happened to grow up in good ole ‘Merica? Our education system is entirely built on facts and committing to memory important dates in history (for the most part). Don’t believe us? Ask a ‘Merican if a Kit Kat is a cookie or a biscuit? The answer you will get is that it is a candy bar, fact! Period, argument over. Look here it even says so on wiki-i-know-nothing!!! Now ask this same question to someone who lives of the glimmering side of the pond? Pour a nice cup of PG Tips and prepare to debate Kit Kat’s!!!
End of Act One
We’ll leave this here to cheer you up a bit…
Act Two
From where we sit (in a plush purple love sac) being educated means being able to understand the question presented and thoroughly knowing enough relevant information to make a reasoned argument. It’s in making a reasoned argument, not facts, this is our key message today. What ever happened to learning to think and express ones thoughts in a persuasive way?
What is the currency of learning? What are some of the tangible’s? Is it preparing oneself to be wrong?
Truth be told it isn’t what you know but how you come to know it that matters to us most. Our society has forced us from an early age to memorize facts and useless information that clutter up our minds (pick up any issue of Runners World as an example). Your ability to articulate facts may be useful for passing tests in your life, impressing your friends during your conversation about Glee last night…When all is said and done? What do you do after you have exhausted your vast knowledge of facts?
The Plan-
The brighter, more serious students were the least desirous of grades, possibly because they were more interested in the subject matter of the course, whereas the dull or lazy students were the most desirous of grades, possibly because grades told them if they were getting by.

Notes:
Jump in peeps and fire away with the comments! YOUR comments and sense of community here facilitate a sharing of ideas…Hmm, not facts. Have a blast and ENJOY!!!
Love the video. Watching them follow the boy was a leadership inspiration (except for the busting-their-heads part).
Hey guys follow me!!!
Ha ha. I love the bumper sticker!
Thanks! Finally a man has stepped up and accepted responsibility…
Nickelback, Facts vs. Ignorance and dog balls – it doesn’t get any better than that. I was two seconds away from enlightenment before I clicked on the email directing me to this post… I was just a touch shy and I didn’t know how to complete the process.
Now I am complete.
Awesome!!! “…Nickelback, Facts vs. Ignorance and dog balls”. Maybe I should change the title of the post? Glad you had a laugh and have a great day!!!
I am from the US and completely agree about memorizing dates and saying we “Know” history. We learn the when and the where and the how of war, but rarely do we EVER read the why beyond “Because our way of life was threatened!” For example, I have recently been reading a lot about the Nazi practice of Eugenics during WWII. How atricious! Eliminating a race or imperfect part of the population by sterilization. Those Nazi’s were nuts! But if we look closer at history, we learm that the Nazi’s got this idea from American doctors and the use of sterilization of 60,000 people in 27 States before Hitler came to power. But no one wants to talk about THAT. 🙂
cup of PG and a kit-kat would be amazing right now… gonna put the kettle on, and my names not polly
Great!!! So…Is a Kit-Kat a biscuit or a cookie?!?
after some very carefull consideration, I have decided to think about it abit more… initial thoughts are that it should be thought of as a luxury biscuit 1) wafers are a biscuit, 2) luxury biscuits have either, jam, chocolate, or fondent… but i think i should have another kit-kat, you can always use more data
Heck let’s toss this in the mix as well…Thoughts on orange flav Kit Kat’s? I had cherry Kit Kat not long ago that was to die for! Mint…?
… this is going to require further research. i shall draw up a suitable methodology and protocol so as to get quantitative (such as frequency each flavour kit-kat is eaten and how the participant would classify this classic treat, participant’s country of origin, etc…) and qualitative (an eating satisfaction questionnaire… this would need to be validated by some institutional body specialising in biscuit/cookie/candy control so as not to bias the experiment). participant inclusion/exclusion criteria will also need careful consideration… we could apply for funding for this study, it is of scientific interest!
I see a nobel peace prize in your future!
it would bring clarity to an largely miss-understood field… also scuffel many a debate at the pub, couldn’t do that now! shame, i was going to ask if you wanted to participate 😉
Would I ever help out!?! You bet!!!
Love this LOL!! And love that you opened up the door on this topic too because I completely agree!! These days it seems everyone thinks they are the expert. Or is it that we give too much recognition for one persons opinion and way of doing something that it reflects an attitude of “they must know what they are doing, so I will follow that guy….” An education today? Well yeah its all about “how” you learn because in our ed system its all about the test and learning to take that test RIGHT. Because in our world its not that we should nurture the desire of learning of our youth, its to tell them what to know and when to know it by. Not that I’m an expert on this topic 😉 but really of the kids who score high and are deemed ‘exceptionally smart’ how many can confidently debate any topic for that matter unless it had a multiple choice answer sheet to go with it?! Honestly sitting here in my jams I wasn’t expecting your post to strike an essay of a response from myself haha. Thanks for the very interesting read though!! The future is in question when there is such low confidence in our education system. So I’m all about this slowly growing movement of providing the environment to children ourselves that will give them the opportunity to learn in other ways and develop their own minds and opinions outside of what we are mostly told we “should know.” Or what happened on the latest episode of glee 🙂
Of all the ramblings and stuff I toss around here. This topic is fairly important to me as a father and I am really touched that you took the time to write about what you are passionate about. Pretty cool 🙂
Am I the expert in “your” health? Nope, are you though…This is kinda where I was going to go with it today. It all boils down to YOU. I figured between crazy seals, a dog in a two piece, Glee and Nickleback…A nerve would be struck to open our minds a bit to engage in open, honest and passionate dialog.
Also, your blog rocks and is so inspiring!!!
Well thank you for being open to it!! As parents everything begins to take new light when it comes to facing the world with our young ones’ futures at stake huh?!
Very true though, that is what it boils down to! This was a great way to bring about the variety of minds and passions in this blog world… and I love that last photo too lol!!
I appreciate you thinking that of my blog…Thanks!!
I like your take on what it means to be educated. People always come up to me asking “I saw this on tv, why aren’t you doing it?” Just because someone is on tv – doesn’t mean they are the most qualified.
Great point!!! I have been trying for a bit now to ween myself from TV and gosh is it hard. As soon as the NHL playoffs are over I will give it another go 😉
Don’t get me wrong – I love tv! I have a show to watch every night of the week. It just annoys me when someone sees a new diet/fitness thing on tv and thinks it’s ok to try cuz it’s on tv.
Now you are pushing my buttons… 🙂
Well so and so actor/actress does this? And, Well reseachers say, blah and I saw it on TV? So it must be good…
