A quick show of hands: Have you ever held onto the belief that you could change someone else’s behavior, if you were persistent and dedicated enough?
I witness this quite often with friends going to yoga class, working out together and the awesome folks I help out. Sadly, I have arrived at the conclusion that people only change when it’s rewarding for them to do so, and when they’re capable of it.
Rewarding and Capable – Interesting.

Daily Meditation:
I have lived many years shrouded in the fallacy that “peer” pressure, being a “caring” friend pressure, will make those close to me change. I’m writing this morning to share with you these following thoughts – People only change when they’re ready to. If I want my friend to change, I have to figure out how they would be motivated to change, how change would benefit them.
On the subject of motivation and change – I offer up to you these two links. Have a beautiful day, and please take care!
So very true. I lived the lie for 18 years (more probably) until my divorce when I finally realize that he could not change because he did not want to change. What I thought was change was a facade to placate me. I forced him to live a lie and we were both miserable. I am now living a dream with someone whose being I embrace en toto. And vice versa. We couldn’t be happier. :-).
Have I shared with you recently how awesome the two of you are? And not like, run of the mill awesome – Completely and totally awesome!
🙂 Too kind! We are counting down, less than 24 hours til green chile (new mexico). WOOT!
I have seen this in myself, in my friends and family and also professionally in my healing practice. Some people would come for 1 session and get numerous shifts in their lives. Others would come over and over and not seem to shift at all.
Even the things I’ve worked on shifting/healing within myself…some have healed and changed immediately, other things I have just now been able to heal after working on it for over 40 years. I think that in addition to motivation, some things are waiting for a specific time in someone’s life or specific time on the planet.
Change tends to happen in layers and sometimes you can’t get to X until you have healed or cleared M.
Just think how much the world would change if we all concentrated on what we could change within us? Even though I understand and believe what you say it’s a struggle when I see people I care for deeply hurting themselves when it’s preventable. I suppose it’s accepting where you end and the other begins. Very thoughtful post thanks.
The world would truly be a pretty cool place to be when we stop to concentrate on what we could and can change within us … The world is still amazing, although we can all do our part to make it a little bit more harmonious, and dare I say happier. 🙂
