This morning as I walked along the lakeshore,
I fell in love with a wren
and later in the day with a mouse
the cat had dropped under the dining room table.
In the shadows of an autumn evening,
I fell for a seamstress
still at her machine in the tailor’s window,
and later for a bowl of broth,
steam rising like smoke from a naval battle.
This is the best kind of love, I thought,
without recompense, without gifts,
or unkind words, without suspicion,
or silence on the telephone.
The love of the chestnut,
the jazz cap and one hand on the wheel.
No lust, no slam of the doorโ
the love of the miniature orange tree,
the clean white shirt, the hot evening shower,
the highway that cuts across Florida.
No waiting, no huffiness, or rancorโ
just a twinge every now and then
for the wren who had built her nest
on a low branch overhanging the water
and for the dead mouse,
still dressed in its light brown suit.
But my heart is always propped up
in a field on its tripod,
ready for the next arrow.
After I carried the mouse by the tail
to a pile of leaves in the woods,
I found myself standing at the bathroom sink
gazing down affectionately at the soap,
so patient and soluble,
so at home in its pale green soap dish.
I could feel myself falling again
as I felt its turning in my wet hands
and caught the scent of lavender and stone.
No words to add. Thanks for righting my state of mind for the day.
I hope you have a beautiful day my friend. ๐
What a sweet poem. I’m going to reblog it…partly because I haven’t been writing lately and mostly because I love it ๐ I have this practice of a gratitude journal I write in each day and also of standing in a shower giving thanks for the water, feeling the stream of water on my head, like the fountain of God’s love pouring into me…giving thanks for the shower stall that encloses the water and steam, the shower floor that holds me up, the walls of the bathroom that enclose it all and then beyond those doors and outward to every part of my life, material and non-material.
… No waiting, no huffiness, or rancorโ
just a twinge every now and then …

Love this poem and it’s invitation to fall in love with everything around us. This practice of love and gratitude lifts our vibration and thus the vibration of the planet. It keeps us open to the beauty and grace that is all around us. It opens our perception to the abundance and prosperity that lies beyond our bank accounts and wallet. And it connects us in oneness which is our truth.
I’m humbled, deeply, that this inspiring poem resonated within you this morning, thank you so much for sharing as well. ๐
I’m undone.
Each time I go back and reread this poem today, the nuance and subtle beauty strike deeper – like the next “arrow”. ๐
