You are what you eat!
Posted: June 18, 2012 Filed under: Random Workout | Tags: diet, health, nutrition, sweet wholesome health 14 CommentsOnce again we are very grateful to have Melissa over today from Sweet Wholesome Health with such an inspiring article. Get the hummus ready and be sure to clean up the mess you left behind toasting your bagel…This is a really good read!
How much time do you spend looking into exactly what you are eating? How closely are you looking?
Ideally everyone that is aware of being healthy would cook completely from scratch and use only ingredients that they grew themselves. Then there would be no guessing as to what and how it was grown but this is impossible for most of us and totally unrealistic. Of course you can grow some things and cook a lot of your meals but not everyone has as much time as they need for what they would like to be eating.
Here are my top 2 tips for finding the best foods in a sea of options at the SUPERMARKET!
- Stop looking at the nutrition facts first. Remember you are what you eat! Start with the ingredients list. If you can’t read or understand what most of the ingredients, it is NOT FOOD and your body doesn’t know how to digest it. There are some really great products out there but you have to look closely to find them. For example my favorite on the go bar is LaraBars. They are delicious, give you energy and only have 5 or 6 real ingredients which means it is all real food yum!
- Although the “healthy foods” section is usually way more expensive at supermarkets, there is usually some really good markdowns. The general public stay away from this isle because of the cost so there are always products that the supermarket has to push to sell which means major markdowns! Stock up on these delicious real ingredient foods for when you need something quick.
Always love your body and do the best you can with what you have 🙂
Love this post! I used to be a nutrition list reader…but I learned I need to be able to pronounce the items in the list of ingredients. If I can’t, it doesn’t matter how few calories or fat there is – it’s not ‘healthy’ food (if you want to call it that…)
It’s nice to hear these tips after a weekend of celebrations. Great reminders!
Simple but informative blog 🙂
Is that a Jeremiah Johnson nod? I fell hard for that show as a kid and watched it every time I caught it on television. Its been too long, need to see it again.
Good advice, I’ll check out those LaraBars. It is definitely more expensive to buy stuff out of the health foods section, but I’ve found that as we plan our meals better we save money because we have less wasteful spending. AND we shop at a less expensive store for much of our fresh fruit which cuts down our overall shopping cost and makes budget room for the things we buy that are more healthy at the main grocery store.
Great to discover your site through RusVW. I have subscribed! 🙂
I’m pretty sure it is 🙂 When I first saw this pic it brought back a lot of memories. Melissa is a wonderful resource here so feel free to ask any questions that you may have. Thank you for stopping on over…The light is always on 😉
I spend way too much time thinking about what I eat! Thankfully that generally translates to really healthy eating as well. I started making my own larabars in my food processor to save $$ I LOVE them! Sweet shot of Robert Redford at the end?!?
Alright, now I feel really guilty for that bag of M&Ms I ate today 😉 Ok, partially kidding! Thanks for the great post!
Well then I’m a big fat piece of cake today! 🙂 And there’s another slice calling my name!

Brilliant post, every piece of advice I’ve had from nutrionists, dieticians and doctors backs this up!
Thanks for the like on my post yesterday! This was a great post of yours! I definitely need to do this to the fullest. I read ingredients list often but I do get weak at times with the kiddos and buy things mommy knows I shouldn’t buy. Especially being in the health food industry I know what all those harmful chemicals in “food” do to our bodies. Oh well…I am still human. Thanks for this post to remind me…WE are what we eat.. AND THink ;0)
No problem! I really enjoy your blog 🙂 I am far from perfect when it comes to food, trust me. Melissa always has such great advice to share with us every other Monday so be sure to stop on by again! Be well and take acre.
Thanks for this post today. I believe this is something we all must review from time to time.
I gave into Sweet Frog again today! Damn them!
Thanks everyone for your awesome comments! @Carl V. that is a great plan and we actually do the same. We have a place we go for everything fresh and then supplement with as little as possible from the big supermarket. I know at our local place Lara Bars and others like it do go on sale so keep an eye out and stock up. They are great in an emergency.:)
@Somer I love making my own granola bars as well (when I have the time!) They last a while and are always filled with whole foods. What recipe do you use?!
