The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
Lovely first line…
My thoughts exactly! They pull you right into the very essence of his powerful words.
Who is the author? I can’ t read Arabic. Lovely poem.
His name is Rumi, and if you would like to learn more about him? The Persian spelling of his name at the bottom of the page has link to his wiki page. I hope you are having a beautiful day, Take care!
I know Rumi well, have studied Islam, and been involved in Sufism since 1980, along with his poetry but just didn’t recognize that poem or the name in Arabic 🙂
